Using convincing deepfake videos, manipulated messages, and voice cloning, the scammer drained over $81,000 from her through gift cards, money orders, Zelle payments, cash, and Bitcoin.
By the time her daughter Vivian discovered the fraud, Abigail had also sold her paid-off condo at a massive loss, sacrificing her retirement home.
The ai scam, which started innocently on Facebook and moved to WhatsApp, isolated Abigail from her family and exploited her trust, leading to financial ruin and displacement.
How the Scam Unfolded and Manipulated the Victim
The fraud began with a direct message on Facebook, where the impostor posed as Steve Burton, a star from “General Hospital” that Abigail admired.
Conversations quickly shifted to encrypted WhatsApp to evade detection, with the scammer grooming Abigail to keep everything secret from her family.
Deepfake videos addressed her personally, calling her “my queen,” and seemed authentic enough to override her skepticism.
Despite red flags like requests for gift cards and urgent payments, Abigail’s emotional investment blinded her, escalating from small sums to her entire savings.
Escalation to Home Sale and Legal Struggles
Once Abigail’s liquid assets were exhausted, the scammer pressured her to sell her $550,000-valued condo for just $350,000, promising a shared future in a beach house.
She completed the sale secretly, even hiding it from her husband, Even telling the buyer to not park in the driveway to hide it from her husband, with a wholesale real estate company buying it without questioning the suspicious circumstances.
This left the family evicted and fighting in court, arguing Abigail’s bipolar disorder impaired her capacity to consent. Law enforcement documented the case but could recover little, as scammers operated overseas, turning the matter into a costly civil battle.
Key Lessons and Prevention Strategies for Families
Vivian’s experience highlights critical warning signs: shifting to encrypted apps, deepfake proofs, urgent untraceable payments, and secrecy from loved ones. To protect against such scams, families should encourage open financial discussions, use antivirus software, remove personal data from online databases.
