Ukraine has revolutionized modern warfare by heavily relying on drones, particularly low-cost first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drones and bomber variants, to deliver precise aerial strikes against Russian forces from above.
These small, agile quadcopters—often equipped with explosive payloads—are piloted in real-time via video feeds and goggles by operators who guide them directly into targets like infantry positions, vehicles, trenches, and armored units.

FPV drones excel in “dive-bombing” tactics, approaching at high speed from above to exploit vulnerabilities in Russian defenses, bypassing traditional cover and electronic warfare jamming through short-range precision or fiber-optic guidance in some cases. Ukraine’s “Army of Drones” initiative has scaled production massively, with millions produced annually, allowing widespread deployment down to company levels.
This has turned the battlefield into a transparent “kill zone” extending 10–20 kilometers deep, where drones provide constant overwatch, spot targets for artillery, and execute devastating strikes that inflict heavy casualties—reportedly eliminating tens of thousands of Russian troops monthly in recent periods.
Beyond tactical frontline engagements, Ukraine employs advanced drone swarms and long-range systems for deeper strikes, including AI-assisted coordination where groups of drones autonomously decide attack sequences to overwhelm Russian positions or infrastructure.
Operations like Operation Spiderweb in 2025 demonstrated this by smuggling and launching swarms of FPV drones from within Russia to destroy strategic bombers at airbases hundreds or thousands of kilometers away. Bomber drones drop munitions from altitude onto troop concentrations or logistics, while emerging autonomous “killer” drones lock onto targets and pursue them independently. These tactics have disrupted Russian advances, targeted supply lines, oil refineries, and command posts, forcing Moscow into defensive postures. The combination of cheap, expendable hardware with innovative software and human ingenuity has made drone warfare a dominant force, shifting the conflict toward asymmetric aerial dominance and proving drones can achieve effects once reserved for manned aircraft or artillery barrages.
