The Government of Cuba has issued a stark warning to international airlines, announcing that the country will exhaust all its jet fuel supplies of aviation fuel (Jet A1 kerosene) as of Monday, February 9, 2026. The Cuban airline shortages are expected to persist for at least the next month across all international airports, including Havana’s José Martí.

This development stems from a severe energy crisis exacerbated by intensified U.S. pressure under President Donald Trump, says Cuba is a national security threat and imposed measures to block oil deliveries.

The Cuban authorities describe the situation as resulting from a renewed “oil siege” by the United States, which has effectively cut off traditional suppliers and deterred others through threats of punitive tariffs on any nation providing petroleum products to the island.

This Cuban fuel cutoff follows the dramatic U.S. military operation in early January 2026 that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a key ally who had long supplied Cuba with subsidized oil in exchange for support.

With Venezuelan shipments halted and the Trump administration threatening secondary sanctions—including tariffs on countries like Mexico that might step in—Cuba’s already strained economy faces deepened disruptions, including potential flight cancellations, rerouting for long-haul carriers, and further blows to its vital tourism sector.
