Food Fraud: A Growing Threat

Food fraud involves the intentional deception of consumers for economic gain, through practices such as adulteration, substitution, mislabeling, or counterfeiting. This issue has surged in recent years, with reported cases increasing significantly—around 10% in 2024 and continuing into 2025, driven by economic pressures, supply chain disruptions, and high commodity prices. High-value items like nuts, dairy, seafood, spices, olive oil, honey, and cocoa remain prime targets, as fraudsters exploit shortages to replace premium ingredients with cheaper or inferior alternatives.
