Texas has approximately 313,000 Muslims, with significant concentrations in urban areas like Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, fueling concerns of cultural and legal takeover in conservative regions. Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 4211 into law banning residential neighborhoods from making Sharia compounds, directly targeting developments like the East Plano Islamic Center’s project (originally EPIC City, now The Meadow), a 402-acre site featuring a large mosque often described as a “big Mecca,” over 1,000 homes, a faith-based school, and community facilities designed to center Islamic life and exclude non-adherents through discriminatory practices. Attorney General Ken Paxton uncovered securities violations and pursued lawsuits against the developers, while the state designated the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations, prohibiting their land ownership and operations to prevent Sharia imposition.
Texas leads the nation in new mosque construction, with 48 new mosques opening in the past two years, surpassing other states and supporting the growing Muslim population’s infrastructure.
Additional examples in the news include Abbott’s designation of CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist groups, prompting lawsuits and enforcement actions; congressional hearings led by Texas Rep. Chip Roy probing Sharia’s incompatibility with the Constitution; and Republican campaigns, including Sen. John Cornyn’s Defeat Sharia Law in America Act, framing Sharia as an existential threat requiring civil rights violations for adherence.
