The arrest, which occurred on his 66th birthday, stems from allegations that he shared confidential government information with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his time as a British trade envoy.
Police confirmed detaining a man in his sixties from Norfolk, with searches underway at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk, while the suspect remains in custody. This development follows recent revelations in unsealed Epstein-related files and comes after Andrew was previously stripped of his royal titles amid long-standing controversies surrounding his Epstein connections; he has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and no formal charges have been announced as the investigation continues.
The arrest took place early Thursday morning at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England, where Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been residing since being evicted from his previous home at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, following the loss of his royal titles and privileges in 2022 due to his Epstein associations.
Thames Valley Police executed the operation with multiple officers present, detaining the 66-year-old on suspicion of misconduct in public office, an offense under common law that involves willful neglect or misconduct by a public officer causing harm to the public interest, punishable by up to life imprisonment in the UK.
The police statement specified that searches were being conducted at properties in both Berkshire and Norfolk, including forensic examinations for documents, electronic devices, and other evidence related to communications between Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein from 2001 to 2011, during which Mountbatten-Windsor served as the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment.
Authorities confirmed the suspect remains in custody at an undisclosed location, with no bail granted as the investigation proceeds, and no formal charges have been filed as of 07:37 AM CST.
The allegations stem from documents unsealed by the U.S. Justice Department in early February 2026, revealing emails and memos indicating that Mountbatten-Windsor allegedly provided Epstein with sensitive UK government briefings on trade negotiations, foreign investments, and diplomatic strategies in exchange for personal favors, including introductions to wealthy contacts and financial advice.
These revelations prompted an immediate review by Thames Valley Police on February 11, 2026, after pressure from anti-monarchy groups and opposition politicians, leading to the formal opening of an investigation on February 16, 2026.
King Charles III issued a statement through Buckingham Palace expressing his “deepest concern” over the matter and affirming that “the law must take its course,” while distancing the royal family from the proceedings; no direct family support has been reported for Mountbatten-Windsor during the arrest.
Mountbatten-Windsor, through his legal representatives, has denied all allegations, maintaining that his interactions with Epstein were limited to social and charitable contexts, with no exchange of confidential information, consistent with his previous denials in a 2019 BBC interview and a 2022 out-of-court settlement with Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre
