Jesus used strong, condemnatory language like “snakes,” “vipers,” and “brood of vipers” primarily to address the Pharisees and other religious leaders of His time. In passages such as Matthew 12:34, He declared, “You brood of vipers! How can you who are evil say anything good?” after they accused Him of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebul.
This term, meaning a nest or offspring of poisonous snakes, highlighted their deceptive, hypocritical, and spiritually poisonous nature. They appeared righteous outwardly but harbored evil intentions and corrupted teachings inwardly. Jesus emphasized that their words revealed the wickedness in their hearts, as “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Similarly, John the Baptist had earlier called the same group a “brood of vipers” when they came to his baptism without genuine repentance (Matthew 3:7), showing this was a pointed critique of unrepentant religious hypocrisy.
The sharpest use of these terms appears in Jesus’ scathing woes against the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23. In verse 33, Jesus said, “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” This came amid a series of accusations that they burdened people with heavy rules while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith; they were like whitewashed tombs—beautiful outside but full of death inside. By calling them serpents and vipers—symbols of deceit and evil from Genesis onward—Jesus exposed their role as spiritual dangers who misled the people and opposed God’s kingdom. These were not casual insults but prophetic judgments meant to shock them into repentance, underscoring the severity of rejecting truth while claiming moral authority.
In a different but related instance, Jesus referred to Herod Antipas (the tetrarch) as “that fox” in Luke 13:32. When Pharisees warned Him that Herod wanted to kill Him, Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.'” In the cultural context, calling someone a fox was derogatory, implying cunning, treachery, or insignificance compared to a lion (a symbol of true kingship). Unlike the “brood of vipers” directed at hypocritical religious figures, this targeted a political ruler seen as sly and destructive. Jesus showed no fear, continuing His mission undeterred. While Jesus also used animal metaphors like “dogs” and “swine” in Matthew 7:6 to describe those who scorn sacred truths (not direct name-calling of specific people), His strongest animal rebukes focused on those in power who abused it through hypocrisy or malice.
