Erik Prince, born in 1969 in Holland, Michigan, is an American entrepreneur, former U.S. Navy SEAL officer, and the founder of Blackwater (later renamed Academi), the controversial private military company that rose to prominence during the Iraq War by providing security, training, and logistics services to the U.S. government and other clients.
Coming from a wealthy, conservative family—his father built a successful auto-parts business, and his sister is Betsy DeVos, former U.S. Secretary of Education—Prince attended Hillsdale College and briefly the Naval Academy before serving in the SEALs until the mid-1990s.
After leaving the military, he established Blackwater in 1997, which grew into a major contractor amid post-9/11 outsourcing but faced intense scrutiny over incidents like the 2007 Nisour Square massacre. Following the company’s sale in 2010, Prince shifted focus to private equity through Frontier Resource Group, pursued ventures in Africa and the Middle East, and has remained active in global security matters, recently involving himself in drone warfare initiatives in Ukraine, operations supporting forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and advisory roles in conflict zones, all while maintaining a profile as a vocal advocate for privatized military solutions and military reform.
