In 1963, he intensely pressured Israel over its Dimona nuclear reactor, insisting on regular U.S. inspections (referred to diplomatically as “visits”) to confirm it was solely for peaceful purposes. Kennedy warned Israeli leaders—including Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and later Levi Eshkol—that failure to comply could seriously jeopardize America’s commitment and support for Israel.
Declassified documents show this was a high-stakes confrontation with Israel and Kennedy, he pushed for bi-annual, thorough inspections with full access, essentially issuing what some Israeli officials viewed as an ultimatum. A threat.
Israel resisted, evaded full transparency, and provided only limited or stage-managed access in earlier visits (1961–1962). Kennedy’s demands escalated through letters and diplomatic channels in spring and summer 1963.We all know what happened to him later that year.
Subsequent presidents, starting with Lyndon B. Johnson, shifted toward accepting Israel’s nuclear programs (with inspections becoming less rigorous and eventually fading), and later administrations (like Nixon’s 1969 understanding with Golda Meir) just looked the other way on the issue.
Kennedy’s level of direct pressure on Israel’s nuclear program remains unmatched in U.S.-Israel relations.

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in an open motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, struck by bullets fired from the Texas School Book Depository. He was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:00 p.m., with Lee Harvey Oswald identified as the lone gunman by official investigations like the Warren Commission.
