Actor John Lithgow has defended his decision to portray Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books, despite ongoing controversy surrounding the author’s views on transgender issues. The 80-year-old actor addressed the backlash in a recent interview, acknowledging that he took the criticism “extremely seriously.” Rowling has faced widespread criticism for her outspoken opposition to certain aspects of transgender ideology and her advocacy for women-only spaces, which has led some to boycott projects associated with her work.

Lithgow highlighted what he sees as irony in Rowling’s positions, given the core themes of the Harry Potter series. He noted that the stories, beloved by young and old alike, emphasize acceptance, the battle between good and evil, and kindness over cruelty. “It’s deeply felt,” he said, expressing bewilderment at Rowling’s expressed views, which he described as “inexplicable.” Although he has never met the author and confirmed she is not involved in the production, Lithgow praised the team adapting the books into an eight-year TV series, calling them remarkable professionals he is eager to work with.

He further emphasized that the Harry Potter narrative shows “no trace of transphobic sensitivity,” and he was troubled by calls from critics urging him to abandon the role. Despite the discomfort caused by the controversy, Lithgow ultimately chose to proceed, viewing it as a difficult but necessary decision. In a previous interview from April, he admitted to being shocked by the initial backlash, revealing that he hadn’t initially factored in Rowling’s political stances when accepting the part.

Before committing, Lithgow received a cautionary text from a close friend who is the mother of a transgender child, which he likened to a “canary in the coal mine.” However, this did not sway him from taking on the role, which he sees as potentially his last major one due to its eight-year commitment. Reflecting on his mortality, he described it as a fitting “winding-down” opportunity in his career.
