It is confirmed that amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, numerous American troops in the Middle East have been forced to relocate from damaged or uninhabitable military bases—hit by Iranian missile and drone strikes—to hotels, office spaces, and other temporary civilian sites across the region, including Gulf states like Bahrain and the UAE. From these makeshift “alternative” locations, many service members are now conducting remote operations and supporting the war effort, effectively fighting while working out of hotel rooms, as traditional bases have been rendered largely unusable. Iranian officials have condemned the move, accusing the U.S. of using civilians as human shields and warning that hotels housing American troops could become legitimate military targets. This dispersal highlights the intense retaliatory pressure on U.S. forces and raises questions about logistical challenges in sustaining operations outside fortified installations.
Iran Turns Strait of Hormuz Into Tehran Toll Booth
In a significant escalation of control over one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, Iran has begun directing international shipping traffic through a narrow corridor in its territorial waters within the Strait of Hormuz.
In the red dotted line on the map below, you can see where oil tankers now need to travel through. The old Straght of Hormuz shipping lanes were the blue line. Now if oil tankers travel through the Straight of Hormuz on the blue line they will get bombed. Only oil tankers that pass through the red line and pay the fee are safe.
New Hormuz Toll Route: Iran Shifts Traffic Through Larak and Qeshm Islands Lane
This new Straight of Hormuz shipping lane tax toll route, situated between the mainland and islands such as Larak and Qeshm, deviates from the standard two-lane international shipping lane in the middle of the strait.
Iranian authorities, primarily through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), are enforcing a vetting process that includes security checks on vessels’ nationality, ownership, cargo manifests, crew details, and geopolitical alignment. Only “non-hostile” ships—those not linked to perceived aggressors like the United States or Israel—are permitted to proceed, effectively creating a de facto checkpoint system that allows Iran to monitor and approve transits in real time.
This maneuver has been likened by shipping analysts to “Tehran’s tollbooth,” as vessels must now submit to IRGC oversight and, in some cases, pay substantial fees for safe passage—reportedly up to $2 million per transit, with payments sometimes settled in Chinese yuan.
Iranian lawmakers have defended the policy as a legitimate security measure and compensation for maintaining safe navigation, drawing parallels to tolls collected at man-made waterways like the Suez or Panama Canals. While traffic through the strait has already plummeted amid regional tensions, this controlled corridor and associated tolls risk further disrupting global oil and LNG supplies, potentially driving up energy prices and reshaping international maritime economics. Critics argue the move violates long-standing norms of free passage in international straits, though Iran maintains it enhances regional security in exchange for the imposed taxes.
