The American bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a majestic bird of prey and the national bird of the United States. With its striking white head and tail contrasting against a dark brown body, piercing yellow eyes, and powerful yellow beak and talons, it is instantly recognizable. Adult bald eagles have a wingspan that can reach up to 8 feet, making them one of the largest raptors in North America. Bald eagles are skilled hunters and opportunistic feeders. Their diet consists mainly of fish, which they snatch from the water’s surface with their sharp talons while soaring high above. They also consume small mammals, birds, and carrion when necessary. Known for their impressive eyesight—up to eight times sharper than that of humans—they can spot prey from great distances. Bald eagles are also known to steal food from other birds like ospreys through a behavior called kleptoparasitism, demonstrating their opportunistic nature.

The bald eagle holds deep symbolic significance in American culture. It was chosen as the national emblem in 1782, representing freedom, strength, and independence. Its image appears on the Great Seal of the United States, currency, and numerous government buildings. Despite its symbolic importance, the species faced severe threats in the mid-20th century due to habitat loss, hunting, and the widespread use of the pesticide DDT, which caused eggshell thinning and reproductive failure.

Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, including the banning of DDT in 1972 and strict protection under the Endangered Species Act, the American bald eagle population has made a remarkable recovery. It was removed from the endangered species list in 2007 and continues to thrive today, with tens of thousands of breeding pairs across the country. The bald eagle remains a powerful symbol of wildlife conservation success and American pride.
