“There was a couple of leaders in Europe who said that this was not Europe’s war. Well, Ukraine is not America’s war and yet we’ve contributed more to that fight than any other country in the world.”
The “Little Marco” nickname originated during the 2016 Republican presidential primary. Donald Trump repeatedly mocked then-Senator Marco Rubio as “Little Marco” (or “Lil’ Marco”), portraying him as weak, small, and inexperienced.
Trump used it to belittle Rubio’s stature (Rubio is about 5’10”) and suggest he lacked the presence or “size” to be president.
This tied into a broader pattern of Trump giving rivals mocking nicknames, like “Low-Energy Jeb” for Jeb Bush.
Rubio fired back at one point by mocking Trump’s “small hands” (implying something else about size), which became a memorable exchange.
The Shoes Connection (Recent 2026 Jokes)
The “shoes” part is a fresh meme from March 2026, after Marco Rubio became Secretary of State in Trump’s second term.
- A Wall Street Journal report revealed that Trump likes gifting his favorite $145 Florsheim Oxford dress shoes to cabinet members, allies, and staff. He reportedly told Rubio and VP JD Vance their shoes were “shitty,” asked their sizes, and made a comment like “you can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size” (with a not-so-subtle jab at manhood/size).
- Photos then surfaced of Rubio wearing the gifted shoes on Capitol Hill — they looked comically oversized (at least 1–2 sizes too big, with noticeable gaps at the heels). He still wore them anyway.
This sparked a wave of online roasting:
- People called them “clown shoes” or “Bozo shoes”.
- Jokes about “Little Marco in Daddy Trump’s big shoes” or “wearing them as a loyalty test/submission” even if they don’t fit.
- Memes tying it back to the old “Little Marco” nickname: “Little Marco with big shoes,” “big shoes to fill” (pun intended), or suggesting Rubio exaggerated his size to Trump and now has to clomp around in them.
- Some compared it to Rubio’s 2016 “Bootgate” scandal, where he was mocked for wearing heeled boots (accused of trying to look taller)
