Israel IDF Kills More Journalists in Gaza Than The Iraq + Vietnam Wars Combined
Since October 7, 2023, the Israel-Gaza war has become the deadliest conflict for journalists on record, with the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documenting at least 256-259 journalists and media workers killed as of early 2026.

The vast majority of these deaths have been attributed to Israeli forces (IDF), according to CPJ’s ongoing tracking of casualties in the conflict, which includes strikes in Gaza as well as related actions in Lebanon, Yemen, and elsewhere. Independent tallies from groups like the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) put the figure even higher—at least 261—while Palestinian media organizations report between 234 and 278 Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza alone.
CPJ’s annual reports highlight record years in 2024 and 2025, with Israel responsible for around 84-86 journalist deaths in 2025 (over two-thirds of the global total of 129 that year) and a similar proportion in prior years, often involving drone strikes or attacks on clearly identified press.

This toll already surpasses the combined total of all journalists and reporters killed while covering the entire Iraq War (2003–2011) and the Vietnam War (roughly 1965–1975).
CPJ’s definitive count for Iraq stands at 150 journalists killed (plus 54 media support workers), the highest for any single conflict in its records at the time. In Vietnam, Reporters Without Borders and other compilations document around 63 journalists killed over two decades.
Adding these gives a combined total of roughly 213—yet the Israel-Gaza conflict has exceeded that in under three years, with CPJ noting that Israel has killed more journalists than any other government since it began tracking data in 1992.
While exact attributions can be disputed amid the fog of war and competing claims (e.g., some journalists accused by Israel of militant ties without independent verification), the scale documented by multiple independent watchdogs confirms the Gaza war’s unprecedented impact on the press.
