U.S. government officials and Wall Street analysts are beginning to consider the prospect that oil prices might surge to an unprecedented $200 per barrel, according to Bloomberg.

This scenario planning is described as routine stress testing during periods of geopolitical strain rather than a base-case prediction. It reflects growing concerns over prolonged supply disruptions stemming from attacks on Middle East energy infrastructure.
Brent crude has already climbed sharply above $100 in volatile trading, with physical product prices like jet fuel and diesel pushing even higher in some markets.
Wall Street analysts are echoing these worries, with firms like Macquarie Group warning that if the conflict drags into the summer months, Brent prices could need to exceed $200 per barrel to destroy enough global demand and rebalance the market.
The Australian bank’s strategists assign roughly a 40% probability to this bull-case scenario, which could send U.S. gasoline prices toward $7 per gallon and trigger broader economic shocks, including slowed growth and potential stagflation risks. Other voices, including Saudi energy leaders and analysts at Citi, have similarly flagged the possibility of $150–$200 oil if disruptions persist. This highlights how the current supply shock—exacerbated by hoarding and rationing in Asia—has made once-unthinkable price levels a serious contingency worth evaluating.
Before President Trump’s Iran attack and the subsequent escalation of conflict in late February 2026, oil prices remained relatively stable and moderate. Brent crude, the international benchmark, was trading around $67.02 per barrel closing 1 day before Trumps Bombings first for Israel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the U.S. benchmark, hovered near similar levels or slightly lower in the $65–$70 range. These prices reflected a market that had been influenced by earlier geopolitical tensions and supply dynamics but had not yet experienced the dramatic supply shocks triggered by attacks on energy infrastructure and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts viewed this pre-conflict environment as manageable, with no immediate signs of the extreme volatility or price surges that followed.
