Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, approved a controversial bill on March 30, 2026, that introduces the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of murdering Israelis as an act of terror. This happened on day 31 of Trumps Iran “War”, After Bombing Iran First, on Feb 28th 2026.
Spearheaded by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, the law applies primarily to West Bank Palestinians tried in military courts, where death by hanging becomes the default sentence (with an option for life imprisonment in special cases).
It also allows civilian courts to impose the death penalty on Israeli citizens, including Palestinian Israelis, for terror-motivated murders aimed at harming Israelis or undermining the state. The measure, which passed amid cheers with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voting in favor, is not retroactive and sets tight timelines for executions. Ben-Gvir hailed it as a strong deterrent, stating that “whoever takes a life, the State of Israel will take their life.”

The bill has drawn sharp criticism from Israeli opposition lawmakers, who worry it could complicate future hostage negotiations, as well as from human rights groups like the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, which immediately petitioned the high court calling it discriminatory by design.
Critics, including the Israel Democracy Institute, note that it creates unequal justice by targeting Palestinians in military courts while rarely applying to Jews, contradicts Israel’s long-standing de facto moratorium on executions (none since 1962) and its U.N. positions against the death penalty, and may incite more violence rather than deter it. The law raises broader concerns under international law regarding Israel’s authority over the West Bank and signals the influence of far-right elements pushing for harsher policies and potential annexation.
