Retired Gen. Mark Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who served under both Presidents Trump and Biden, has faced significant repercussions since leaving office in 2023. In January 2025, shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration for his second term, the Pentagon removed Milley’s official portrait from a hallway displaying former chairmen. Days later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revoked Milley’s security clearance and personal security detail, while launching a review of his conduct that could lead to a reduction in his retirement rank.
Milleyโs Bold Oath: No Allegiance to a ‘Wannabe’ Dictator
“Today is not about anyone up here on this stage. Itโs not about the president, the Secretary of Defense, me, CQ [likely referring to someone on stage]. Itโs not about us. Itโs about something much larger than all of us. Itโs about our democracy. Itโs about our republic. We are unique among the world’s armies. We are unique among the world’s militaries. We don’t take an oath to a country. We don’t take an oath to a tribe. We don’t take an oath to a religion. We don’t take an oath to a king or a queen or to a tyrant or a dictator. And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator. We don’t take an oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America, and we’re willing to die to protect it. Every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, guardian and Coast Guardsman, each of us commits our very life to protect and defend that document, regardless of personal price. And we are not easily intimidated.”
