Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has flatly denied claims from the White House that Spain would “cooperate militarily” with the United States amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, insisting that Madrid’s position remains firmly unchanged and committed to de-escalation rather than escalation.

In recent statements, including television interviews and public remarks, Albares emphasized that Spanish military bases—such as those at Rota and Morón de la Frontera, which are jointly operated but under Spanish sovereignty—have not been and will not be used for operations outside the bilateral defense agreement with the U.S. or in violation of the United Nations Charter.

He rejected any involvement in what he described as unilateral actions lacking multilateral backing, underscoring Spain’s preference for dialogue, international law, and moderation over military support in the conflict, even as U.S. aircraft departed the bases following the government’s refusal and amid reported tensions, including trade threats from Washington.
