Israel in Control: 'Senate' Blocks War Powers Resolution in 53-47 Iran Vote
The U.S. Senate voted 53-47 to block (or reject/defeat) a War Powers Resolution that sought to halt further U.S. military strikes against Iran without explicit congressional approval.
This measure, introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and supported by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), aimed to require President Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities against Iran and obtain Congress’s authorization for any continued or future military action.
The vote fell largely along party lines, with most Republicans opposing it (preserving the president’s authority as commander-in-chief) and most Democrats in favor. Sen. Rand Paul was the lone Republican to support the resolution, while Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) was the lone Democrat to vote against it.
The rejection allows ongoing U.S. military operations—part of the escalating conflict involving strikes on Iranian targets—to continue without immediate congressional restrictions. A similar resolution is expected in the House soon, though it faces steep odds in the Republican-controlled chamber and would likely face a presidential veto if passed.
This marks one of several recent congressional votes on war powers amid the U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran.
