Ex FBI agent charged for leaks

Ex-FBI agent charged for leaks during Trump era

An FBI agent named Johnathan Buma, who served 15 years in the agency, was arrested for allegedly sharing classified FBI documents while preparing to write a book about his experiences. The arrest took place at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, where Buma was ready to board an international flight.

The charges against Buma include the unauthorized printing and sharing of around 130 classified FBI files with associates who were helping him with his book. The content of these documents concerned the FBI’s investigations into a foreign nation’s weapons of mass destruction program. Buma’s actions violated protocols by potentially leaking sensitive information that could compromise ongoing or past investigations.

Buma had been vocal about his criticisms of the FBI, particularly regarding how certain investigations were handled during Trump’s presidency. He reportedly raised concerns to government agencies, Congress, and the media about the FBI’s response to information involving Rudy Giuliani and Hunter Biden. He felt his superiors were not adequately addressing these issues, which could suggest internal discord within the agency’s handling of politically sensitive matters.

In addition to sharing classified documents, Buma posted excerpts from his book draft on social media, further disseminating the confidential information. Following his arrest, he was charged with one misdemeanor count of disclosure of confidential information. Buma was released on a $100,000 bond, and his attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation. This case highlights concerns over the security of sensitive information within government agencies and the repercussions of such breaches.
