NYC Postal Workers Kidnapped, Tried Raping Coworker: Indictment

In a shocking incident from June 2023, three New York City postal workers—Daniel Jean, Kirt Acala, and Edward Chou—have been indicted for allegedly kidnapping and attempting to rape a female coworker during an after-work birthday party at the East 14th Street post office in Manhattan’s East Village.

The police were dispatched to the location after an alert was raised, with the information relayed painting a vivid but worrying scenario. On arriving, the officers could distinctly discern a cacophony of rhythmic pounding sounds and desperate pleas for assistance. The source was quickly identified as pertaining to the rear area of the parked mail truck.

Rendering immediate assistance became the top priority, driven by the urgency underscored in the heartfelt cries for help. The officers on the scene made a beeline towards the mail truck, with the situation eluding to possible distress or danger inside. The banging noise, now accompanied by pleas for help, continued to echo from the back of the vehicle, amplifying the tension and urgency of the situation.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, the trio dragged their incapacitated colleague from the post office into the back of a mail truck, where Jean is accused of attempting to sexually assault her. The victim, who reported feeling woozy and losing consciousness during the celebration, was found by police in the truck with her pants undone after officers responded to a 911 call and heard cries for help. All three men face charges of kidnapping in the second degree and sexually motivated kidnapping, with Jean also facing additional charges including attempted rape and sexual abuse; they have pleaded not guilty as the case unfolds in New York State Supreme Court.
