Biden’s Last Stand: Blocking New Coal Leases in the Powder River Basin, In Montana & Wyoming

In a move that underscores President Joe Biden’s commitment to combating climate change, the administration has announced it will block new coal mining leases in the Powder River Basin, a region accounting for about 40% of the United States’ coal production. This will increase energy costs for Americans in this area.

Joe Biden also just Pardoned his son Hunter Biden.

The Powder River Basin spans about 43,000 square miles, encompassing regions of northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana.

Key counties in this area are Campbell, Converse, Johnson, and Sheridan in Wyoming, and Powder River and Rosebud in Montana.

This decision, made public on December 2, 2024, marks a significant policy shift as Biden’s term winds down, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but sparking debate over energy policy, job impacts, and economic implications for coal-dependent states like Wyoming and Montana.

President Joe Biden also just spent $151 Billion on illegal immigrants in 2023.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has amended the Resource Management Plan (RMP) to ban new federal coal leases, effectively making “48.12 billion short tons of coal unavailable for leasing consideration,” according to BLM Buffalo field manager Todd D. Yeager.

This action targets the Powder River Basin, not affecting existing leases but preventing future expansion of coal mining on federal lands in this area.
