Defying the Odds: How DJ Daniel Became America’s Youngest Honorary Secret Service Agent

From Terminal Diagnosis to 900 Badges: The Unstoppable Journey of DJ Daniel.

Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel is a remarkable 13-year-old from Texas whose story of resilience and determination has captured national attention. Diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2018 at the age of six, DJ was given a grim prognosis of just five months to live.

Defying the odds, he has survived for over six years, undergoing 13 surgeries by age 12, all while pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. His journey gained widespread recognition when, on March 4, 2025, President Donald Trump honored him during an address to Congress by naming him an honorary U.S. Secret Service agent. Wearing his Houston Police Department uniform in the House gallery, DJ received a standing ovation from lawmakers across party lines, a rare moment of unity, celebrating his courage and unwavering spirit.

DJ’s mission extends beyond personal triumph; he aims to raise awareness about childhood cancer and honor the memory of Abigail Arias, a young girl who also dreamed of serving in law enforcement before succumbing to cancer in 2019. Since 2022, DJ has been sworn in as an honorary member of over 900 law enforcement agencies nationwide, including the Birmingham Police Department, where he became an honorary deputy chief, with a goal of reaching 1,000 agencies. Alongside his father, Theodis Daniel, he has turned his battle into a platform for inspiration, showing that even in the face of adversity, dreams can persist. DJ’s story is a testament to the power of hope, community support, and the human capacity to transform personal struggle into a lasting legacy.
