The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) Sends 2,500 U.S. Troops To Iran

11th MEU Deploys Early to Bolster CENTCOM Forces. Boxer ARG Rushes to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions.

The Boxer Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) and its embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU) have deployed early from the U.S. West Coast and are expected to sail directly to the Middle East via the Indo-Pacific region.

The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), led by the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) and including associated amphibious warships, has embarked the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU)—a versatile, self-sustaining force of approximately 2,200-2,500 Marines and sailors—in an early deployment from the U.S. West Coast. Originally conducting integrated training and operations in the U.S. 3rd Fleet area of the Pacific following routine pre-deployment exercises, this ARG/MEU team is now transiting directly toward the Middle East via the Indo-Pacific region amid heightened regional tensions, including the ongoing U.S. campaign against Iran. This accelerated movement, approved by the Pentagon to bolster U.S. Central Command’s capabilities with additional amphibious forces, air assets, and rapid-response expeditionary power, underscores the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ flexibility in redirecting assets from the Indo-Pacific to support maritime security, crisis response, and allied operations in the Middle East.
