Russia, China pressure US Arctic defenses as Trump eyes Greenland.

Rising Arctic Incursions Prompt U.S. Security Concerns

Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, has issued a stark warning about the increasing Russian and Chinese military activities near Alaska, including joint operations, turning the Arctic into a key security hotspot. New data reveals a sharp uptick in foreign aircraft and vessels entering the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) since 2019, with over 100 Russian aircraft, four Chinese vessels, and more than a dozen collaborative incursions. Sullivan highlighted that these actions, such as oceanographic surveys, are not benign, emphasizing how U.S. Arctic capabilities have lagged behind adversaries like Russia, which boasts 54 nuclear-powered, weaponized icebreakers compared to America’s two, one of which is currently out of service.

Push for Enhanced U.S. Defenses and Infrastructure

To counter these threats, Sullivan is advocating for accelerated icebreaker construction, reopening Cold War-era bases, and bolstering overall defenses. He chaired a Senate hearing on the U.S. Coast Guard’s Arctic presence, securing funding for at least three new Arctic security cutters as part of a $25 billion investment. Additional initiatives include a U.S.-Finnish deal for icebreaker craft, $115 million to rebuild the Adak base in the Aleutian Islands, and $500 million for a deepwater port in Nome. These efforts aim to project U.S. power, drawing parallels to historical defenses dramatized in films like “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning.”

Strategic Focus on Greenland and Global Alliances

President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland underscores the Arctic’s growing economic and military significance amid melting ice opening new routes. Sullivan noted Trump’s friction with Denmark and praised his “America First” agenda, while NATO officials have warned of China’s aggressive “research” activities in the region. Experts like Brent Sadler from the Heritage Foundation stress the need for increased Coast Guard presence to deter threats to U.S. fisheries and missile detection systems, viewing Russian and Chinese patrols as non-peaceful.

Commitment to Power Projection Against Adversaries

Sullivan emphasized that authoritarian regimes respond only to demonstrated strength, urging Congress to prioritize energy security, military assets, and infrastructure. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy supports these moves, committing state funds to enhance Coast Guard operations and counter foreign influence. With projects like the new Storis icebreaker home-ported in Juneau and broader investments, Sullivan credits Trump’s administration for advancing Arctic defenses, ensuring the U.S. maintains a “peace through strength” posture against ongoing incursions from Russia and China.
