Fulton County, Georgia: FBI seizes 2020 election records.
Fulton County, Georgia, officials are gearing up for legal action against the FBI following its recent search of an election hub and the seizure of 2020 election-related records. Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. publicly stated that the county plans to file a motion in the Northern District of Georgia to contest the warrant’s validity, recover the seized sensitive election materials, including ballots, and ensure their return. Arrington emphasized the need for measures like forensic accounting, keeping documents sealed within Georgia, and protecting voter information, describing the warrant as improper and calling for all available steps to challenge it.
Details of the FBI Search
The FBI executed a search warrant on January 28 at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center in Union City, Georgia, a facility established in 2023 to improve election processes. The warrant permitted the seizure of records, voter rolls, and other data connected to the 2020 election. Arrington noted that no chain-of-custody inventory was conducted during the seizure, making it difficult to verify if all items have been returned. Former President Donald Trump confirmed that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was on site during the operation, which focused on election security matters.
Background on 2020 Election Controversies
Fulton County, home to Atlanta and Georgia’s largest population, was a focal point for voter fraud allegations after the 2020 election, which Trump lostโclaims that were ultimately dismissed in court. In December 2023, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the county seeking access to 2020 ballots, though Fulton County is resisting, arguing the DOJ’s case lacks merit. Additionally, Trump and others faced a 2023 indictment in Fulton County for alleged racketeering to overturn the election results, but the case was dropped after District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified, and the Prosecuting Attorneysโ Council dismissed the charges.
FBI Defense and Ongoing Investigation
FBI Director Kash Patel has strongly defended the bureau’s actions, stating that the search followed an extensive investigation and adhered to legal standards, with authorization from a judge to collect evidence. Patel highlighted the FBI’s mandate under President Trump and the attorney general to pursue probable cause in reducing crime. The investigation continues, with agents reviewing a large volume of seized materials. Fox News reached out to Arrington and the DOJ for further comment, amid criticisms from Democrats regarding the search.
