This practice is said to suppress wages in fields like computer programming and STEM professions, where salaries have stagnated for decades despite high demand, making it harder for American graduates and experienced workers to secure or retain high-paying jobs. In some documented examples, companies have replaced higher-paid U.S. staff with H-1B holders earning 20-40% less, contributing to broader wage depression and reduced employment opportunities for natives in entry-level and mid-tier positions.

While some argue that H-1B workers fill genuine skill shortages and drive overall economic growth, evidence from reports and investigations shows that the program is frequently abused to prioritize cheaper labor to replace American talent, leading to direct job losses and long-term harm to the domestic workforce.
