The Israel and Gaza, Lebanon War Explained

The Israel-Gaza conflict, which has notably spilled over into Lebanon, marks one of the most significant escalations in regional hostilities in recent times.

The conflict initially ignited in October 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza, leading to a retaliatory military campaign by Israel. This war then extended into Lebanon, where Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist political party and militant group backed by Iran, began firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinian fighters in Gaza.

Since then, the conflict has not only seen an exchange of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border but also led to a full-scale military engagement, with Israel launching extensive air and ground operations into southern Lebanon.

The scale and intensity of the fighting in Lebanon have been unparalleled since the 2006 Lebanon War between Hezbollah and Israel. According to various reports, Israel has targeted Hezbollah’s infrastructure, including weapons caches, command centers, and launch sites, aiming to degrade the group’s capabilities significantly. Hezbollah, on its part, has retaliated with increased rocket and drone attacks into northern Israel, leading to evacuations and significant disruption in civilian life.
