Three Arrested in Theft Plot to Transfer US Tech to Iran.
The United States has arrested three Iranian nationals—Samaneh Ghandali, her sister Soroor Ghandali, and Samaneh’s husband Mohammadjavad Khosravi—on charges related to the theft of highly sensitive trade secrets from Google and other American technology companies.

The defendants, all residents of San Jose, California, faced 14 felony counts, including conspiracy to commit trade secret theft, theft and attempted theft of trade secrets, and obstruction of justice by destroying evidence. Authorities arrested them on Thursday, and they made initial court appearances in federal court in San Jose.
According to a federal indictment unsealed on February 20, 2026, and reported by Bloomberg, the trio allegedly conspired to steal confidential files concerning advanced chip and processor technology, including details related to Google’s Tensor processor used in Pixel smartphones.
The stolen data reportedly encompassed confidential documents on processor security, cryptography, and other cutting-edge technologies critical to mobile computing. Prosecutors allege that while employed at Google—where Samaneh Ghandali worked as a hardware engineer and Soroor as an intern before both moved to another tech firm—the defendants exfiltrated hundreds of files to unauthorized third-party platforms and personal devices, some of which were transferred to locations including Iran. In one instance, Samaneh Ghandali is accused of photographing screens displaying trade secrets from another company before traveling to Iran, with devices linked to the group accessing the materials there. Google detected the alleged activity through routine internal monitoring and promptly alerted law enforcement, underscoring the role of corporate vigilance in national security cases.
This case highlights ongoing U.S. concerns over the transfer of advanced semiconductor and AI-related technologies to sanctioned nations like Iran, amid broader efforts to protect intellectual property in the tech sector. The indictment raises national security implications, given restrictions on exporting such dual-use technologies and the defendants’ backgrounds, including Khosravi’s prior service in the Iranian army. If convicted, the charges could carry significant prison sentences, reflecting the Justice Department’s aggressive stance against economic espionage that could benefit adversarial states.
