Russian UFO files reveal chilling encounters, near-miss nuclear launch” (published January 15, 2026, by George Knapp and Caroline Bleakley):The article details previously classified Soviet-era UFO documents obtained by investigative journalist George Knapp during his 1990s trips to Russia. These files come from the USSR’s extensive, decade-long secret UFO investigation program (1978–late 1980s), run by the Ministry of Defense—the likely largest such effort in history. High-ranking military officials collected sighting reports and shared them with scientific bodies tied to the Soviet National Academy of Sciences for independent analysis.

Knapp, who smuggled out many of these files, recently shared two key documents (with original Russian stamps, witness names, and English translations) as part of an ongoing public release series. He presented related evidence (including video testimony) alongside four witnesses during a U.S. congressional hearing on UAPs/UFOs on September 9, 2025.The Central Chilling Incident: October 1982 Near-Miss Nuclear LaunchThe most dramatic case occurred in October 1982 at a strategic nuclear missile base near the hamlet of Usovo (in what is now Ukraine). Multiple high-ranking officers observed a massive UFO event over a wide area around and above the base:

• Numerous unknown objects suddenly appeared in the sky.
• They exhibited highly anomalous behavior: changing shapes and colors, appearing and disappearing abruptly, moving at extreme speeds, hovering/stopping instantly, and performing maneuvers impossible for known aircraft.
• Witnesses (including four senior officers whose names appear in the documents) made detailed drawings of the UFO formations.

The most alarming moment came from a senior communications officer on duty: the launch control system for the base’s nuclear missiles suddenly activated on its own. The console lit up, and the proper authorization codes were somehow entered—initiating a launch sequence for missiles capable of reaching and destroying New York City in just 25 minutes.

Russian personnel were completely powerless to intervene or abort the process. The launch countdown proceeded autonomously until the unknown objects abruptly vanished from the area—at which point the system immediately shut down, halting the launch. Investigation and Official Conclusions. A special investigative team, dispatched by Colonel Boris Sokolov (who oversaw the USSR’s overall UFO program), examined the incident. They disassembled and analyzed the launch control hardware but found no technical malfunction or human error that could explain the unauthorized activation.In his official assessment, Colonel Sokolov concluded that the UFOs were directly responsible for seizing control of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. He interpreted the event as a deliberate “message” from the phenomena—possibly a warning or demonstration of superior capability over human weapons of mass destruction.The files include:
