The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, an unarmed vessel invited as a guest to India’s multilateral MILAN 2026 naval exercise in Visakhapatnam—where its sailors paraded alongside participants including the U.S.—was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine in international waters off Sri Lanka’s southern coast shortly after the drills ended.

The attack, confirmed by U.S. officials as part of the broader campaign against Iran’s navy, killed at least 87 crew members out of roughly 130–180 aboard, with only 32 survivors rescued and treated in Galle; reports indicate the U.S. forces did not assist in recovery efforts, leaving the Sri Lankan Navy to respond to the distress call, recover bodies from the water amid oil slicks.
