How many galaxies are in the Universe? And where Is Earth in the Universe?

To say Humans are the only life in the universe, is ignorant.

The Milky Way, is home to our Solar System and Earth, called and known as the Local Group, is a collection of over 50 galaxies spanning about 10 million light-years.

And to be fair, these maps are not to scale, They are only for a visual reference. The real map would not even fit on your screen. Earth is much smaller, and the universe is much larger. One of the best examples of the size of earth in the universe is, The earth being a small grain of sand on the beach, and everything else around it is the universe.

There are estimated to be around 100–200 billion galaxies total (some estimates go up to trillions when including very faint/small ones) spread across the cosmos. Which make galaxy clusters, which make galaxy superclusters, which is made of walls, filament and voids in the cosmic web. All of these galaxies make the Universe.

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy containing 100–400 billion stars, including our Sun, and is one of roughly 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. It is approximately 13.6 billion years old, nearly as old as the universe itself. The galaxy spans about 100,000–200,000 light-years across.

Surrounding the Milky Way are numerous smaller satellite galaxies, mostly faint dwarf galaxies orbiting it, including the prominent Large Magellanic Cloud (about 160,000–180,000 light-years away) and Small Magellanic Cloud (around 200,000 light-years), both visible to the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere, along with closer ones like the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy and the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (the nearest known at roughly 25,000 light-years, though partially disrupted and merging).

The closest galaxy, most notable major neighbor is the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), a large spiral similar in size or slightly larger, located about 2.5 million light-years away—the closest major galaxy and on a collision course with the Milky Way in roughly 4–5 billion years.

The furthest galaxy, The Triangulum Galaxy (M33) lies a bit farther at 2.7 million light-years. These nearby galaxies, ranging from tiny irregular dwarfs to massive spirals, interact gravitationally, shaping the cosmic neighborhood around our home galaxy.

The Edge of Space: The Boundary of the Universe

This marks the farthest distance from which light has had time to reach us since the Big Bang about 13.8 billion years ago (stretched farther by cosmic expansion), revealing the faint glow of the cosmic microwave background as the oldest light we can detect; beyond it lies more of the same universe, simply too distant for its light to have arrived yet, with no evidence of any abrupt end or “nothingness” waiting there.
