Why Did Paul Harvey Write If I were The Devil?
He wrote and broadcast “If I Were the Devil” in 1965 as a devout Christian and conservative commentator to warn his vast radio audience about the subtle, insidious ways evil could erode American society and values during a turbulent era of social upheaval.
Amid the mid-1960s context of banned school prayer (1962), rising counterculture movements embracing sex, drugs, and rebellion, declining church attendance among youth, political unrest, and shifting morals, Harvey—known for his patriotic and faith-based commentary—crafted the piece to reveal how Satan might operate through gradual subversion rather than overt attack: undermining faith, inverting morality, weakening families and institutions, and promoting dependency and hedonism.
As a form of social criticism, the monologue’s purpose was to highlight that these destructive forces were already at work in contemporary culture, urging listeners to recognize spiritual warfare and resist moral decay before it consumed the nation.
