The Sicarii, a radical Jewish faction, emerged around 54 CE in the Roman province of Judea, primarily operating in Jerusalem and surrounding areas during the mid-1st century CE. This group formed amid growing tensions under Roman occupation, which had begun in 63 BCE when Pompey conquered Jerusalem, leading to widespread resentment among Jews over taxation, cultural imposition, and loss of autonomy.

Sicarii Daggers – Jerusalem’s Deadly Rebellion & Civil War on Romans
The Sicarii’s primary motivation was to incite rebellion against Roman rule and eliminate Jewish collaborators, viewing them as traitors to their faith and people; they employed terrorism to destabilize the region and push for an independent Jewish state, often associating with the broader Zealot movement in their extremist ideology. Their activities intensified in the years leading up to the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE), using hidden daggers called “sicae” to carry out public assassinations in crowded places, blending into the populace to evade capture.
The Sicarii’s first notable assassination targeted Jonathan the High Priest around 56-57 CE during the governorship of Felix, marking the beginning of their high-profile campaign against perceived Roman sympathizers within the Jewish elite. This killing set off a wave of terror, with numerous daily murders creating widespread panic in Jerusalem.
Subsequent assassinations included kidnappings for ransom or exchange, such as the 64 CE abduction of Eleazar ben Ananias, son of a high priest, to secure the release of their imprisoned comrades under Governor Albinus. Led initially by Menahem ben Yehuda, the group focused on Roman officials and collaborating Jews, aiming to fragment the ruling class and provoke a broader uprising, though their tactics ultimately contributed to the chaos that engulfed Judea.
