Anthropic AI Safety Chief Quits: “The World Is In Peril”
In a surprising move that has sparked widespread discussion in the AI community, Mrinank Sharma, the head of Anthropic’s Safeguards Research Team, announced his resignation from the company in February 2026. Sharma, who joined Anthropic in 2024 after completing his PhD, had been instrumental in advancing AI safety initiatives, including research on AI sycophancy, defenses against AI-assisted bioterrorism, and the development of internal transparency mechanisms.
His departure letter, shared publicly on X, expressed gratitude for his time at the firm while highlighting a profound sense of urgency about global challenges. This event comes amid a series of high-profile exits from leading AI companies, underscoring ongoing tensions between rapid technological advancement and ethical considerations.

Central to Sharma’s resignation letter was a stark warning that “the world is in peril,” not solely from AI or bioweapons, but from a “whole series of interconnected crises unfolding in this very moment.” He described these as part of a “poly-crisis” underpinned by a “meta-crisis,” referencing resources like David J. Temple’s “First Principles and First Values.” Sharma emphasized that humanity is approaching a threshold where wisdom must match our growing capacity to influence the world, or face severe consequences. This cryptic yet ominous statement has fueled speculation about underlying concerns at Anthropic, particularly regarding the balance between innovation and safety in AI development.
Sharma cited personal and organizational challenges as key reasons for his exit, noting that throughout his tenure, he repeatedly observed how difficult it is to “truly let our values govern our actions.” He pointed to internal pressures to prioritize what matters most, both within himself and the company, as well as in broader society. Despite his pride in contributions like a final project examining how AI assistants might distort human qualities, Sharma felt a need to reckon with the situation and pursue paths aligned with his integrity. This introspection led him to conclude that it was time to move on, as he sought to explore questions that “have no right to go away,” drawing inspiration from poets like David Whyte and Rainer Maria Rilke.
Looking ahead, Sharma plans to return to the UK and “become invisible” for a time, creating space to explore new endeavors such as pursuing a poetry degree, deepening his practice in facilitation and coaching, and engaging with “poetic truth” alongside scientific knowledge. He ended his letter with William Stafford’s poem “The Way It Is,” symbolizing a commitment to following one’s inner thread amid change. While some critics on X labeled the announcement as vague or self-indulgent, others expressed concern about the loss of safety-focused talent from AI firms. Sharma’s departure raises broader questions about whether AI companies can maintain their founding values as they scale, potentially signaling a need for greater emphasis on ethical governance in the industry.
