Leik N. Myrabo is an American aerospace engineer and former associate professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, renowned for his pioneering work in beamed-energy propulsion systems. Born and educated in the United States, he earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University and a PhD in engineering physics from the University of California, San Diego in 1976, before transitioning from industry roles at companies like TRW Inc. to academia in 1983.
Myrabo is best known for inventing and developing the lightcraft, a revolutionary laser-propelled spacecraft concept that uses ground-based or space-based laser or microwave beams to heat air or create plasma for thrust, eliminating the need for onboard propellant and enabling potentially efficient space launches or high-speed atmospheric flight.
This biggest invention, conceived in the 1960s and advanced through experimental test flights in the 1990s and 2000s—including a Guinness World Record-setting ascent to 71 meters in 2000—drew funding from NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and others, and led to his holding key patents on lightcraft technologies. Additionally, he contributed to hypersonic aerodynamics, co-authored books like the Lightcraft Flight Handbook, founded Lightcraft Technologies, Inc., and established the International Society for Beamed Energy Propulsion to promote global research in the field.
