After Iran Shoots F35 Down, India Buys $25 Billion Worth of Russian Military Equipment, S-400 and Aircraft
New Delhi, March 27, 2026 — In a significant boost to India’s military modernization efforts, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Friday granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for proposals worth approximately ₹2.38 lakh crore (around $25 billion).

India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved major military procurement proposals worth approximately $25 billion (₹2.38 lakh crore) to bolster the armed forces’ capabilities. The clearances include the acquisition of new Medium Transport Aircraft to replace ageing fleets and enhance strategic airlift, additional Russian S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile systems (bringing the total operational squadrons from three to five along with extra missile stockpiles), and further stocks of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for precision strike roles. These decisions reflect India’s ongoing push for defence modernization amid regional security challenges.
The approvals cover key capabilities for the Indian Air Force and Army, including the procurement of Medium Transport Aircraft, additional Russian S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile systems, and further stockpiles of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
The Medium Transport Aircraft programme aims to replace the ageing An-32 and Il-76 fleets, enhancing strategic, tactical, and operational airlift capabilities across the armed forces. Contenders for the roughly 60-aircraft requirement are expected to include Embraer (Brazil), Lockheed Martin (USA), and Ilyushin (Russia).
On the air defense front, the DAC cleared further acquisitions of the S-400 system. India has already operationalized three squadrons of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf, widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defense platforms. The new approvals will bring the total number of squadrons to five, while also augmenting existing missile stockpiles to ensure sustained operational readiness.
Additional BrahMos missile procurements, including extended-range variants, are expected to strengthen precision strike capabilities for the Indian Army and Air Force.
Defence officials described the decisions as a major step toward addressing capability gaps and enhancing deterrence in a complex regional security environment.
