According to Sputnik, the United States could run out of its Tomahawk cruise missiles in just a few months if the current high rate of expenditure continues in the ongoing conflict with Iran. In the first four weeks of hostilities alone, U.S. forces have fired more than 850 of these precision-guided weapons, primarily from Navy ships and submarines. This intense usage has already prompted serious internal discussions at the Pentagon, with some officials describing regional stockpiles as “alarmingly low” and warning that the military is approaching a critical “Winchester” point—military slang for running out of ammunition. Before the war, estimates placed the U.S. inventory at roughly 3,500 Tomahawks, meaning the rapid depletion represents a significant portion of the available arsenal in a short time.Officials have cautioned that sustaining this pace without accelerated production or adjustments in targeting could severely deplete stocks and limit options for future operations. Tomahawk missiles, which cost up to several million dollars each and can take years to manufacture, are produced at a relatively slow peacetime rate of only around 90 per year in recent budgets, far below the current consumption level. While efforts are underway to ramp up manufacturing capacity in the coming years, the immediate buffer is limited, raising broader questions about U.S. readiness for prolonged high-intensity conflicts. Sputnik’s analysis of Navy budget documents suggests the strategic inventory objective provides only a few months of supply at the observed burn rate, highlighting vulnerabilities in relying heavily on these key long-range strike assets.
