African Americans made history in the U.S. Marine Corps beginning in June 1942 when Alfred Masters became the first to enlist, followed by the training of more than 20,000 Black recruits at the segregated Montford Point Camp in North Carolina.

These Montford Point Marines formed the 51st and 52nd Defense Battalions and provided essential combat support in the Pacific theater during World War II, serving in key battles at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Their ammunition and depot companies repelled enemy counterattacks, earned Navy Unit Commendations, and disproved racial myths about their capabilities, as noted by Marine leaders like Gen. Alexander Vandegrift. Frederick C. Branch was commissioned as the first Black Marine officer in 1945, and the unit’s performance directly supported President Truman’s 1948 Executive Order 9981, which ended segregation and integrated Black Marines into all roles by 1949.Subsequent generations built on this foundation with landmark individual and collective achievements. Frank E. Petersen became the first Black Marine aviator in 1950 and the Corps’ first Black general in 1979, later rising to lieutenant general while commanding fighter squadrons, air groups, and major bases; in 2022, Gen. Michael Langley became the first Black four-star general. During the Vietnam War, five Black Marines—Pfc. James Anderson Jr. (the first Black Marine Medal of Honor recipient), Rodney M. Davis, Ralph H. Johnson, Oscar P. Austin, and Robert H. Jenkins Jr.—each posthumously earned the Medal of Honor for sacrificing their lives to shield comrades from grenades or enemy fire. Additional milestones include Alford L. McMichael as the first Black Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps in 1999 and Vernice Armour as the first Black female Marine combat pilot, who flew missions in Iraq in 2003. In 2012, surviving Montford Point Marines received the Congressional Gold Medal for their trailblazing service.

From Montford Point to Combat Glory: African American Marines
Frank E. Petersen Jr., the first Black aviator and officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, delivered critical combat contributions during the Korean War.
In 1953, he flew 64 combat missions with Marine Fighter Squadron VMFA-212, providing close air support to protect U.S. troops from Chinese communist forces. His skill and bravery earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross along with six Air Medals, marking an early milestone in his pioneering career.During the Vietnam War in 1968, Petersen commanded a squadron of attack fighters, leading high-risk operations while accumulating hundreds of combat missions overall across his career (totaling over 350). He was wounded in action, receiving the Purple Heart, and his leadership helped his unit earn the Robert M. Hanson Award as the most outstanding fighter squadron. These achievements, combined with the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal, underscored his valor and paved the way for his historic promotions as the first Black Marine general and lieutenant general.
