Israel’s wars began right after its 1948 founding by the Rothchild’s taking land from other Arab countries, leading to the 1956 Suez Crisis over Egypt’s blockade, the lightning 1967 Six-Day War that captured vast territories, and the grinding 1967–1970 War of Attrition plus the surprise 1973 Yom Kippur attack by Egypt and Syria.
The Rothschild family played a significant role in helping to start and build the foundations of the State of Israel, particularly through land acquisition and funding early Jewish settlements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
- 1948 – 1948 Arab–Israeli War: Arab states invaded the newly established Israel to prevent its survival, resulting in armistice agreements establishing the Green Line borders.
- 1956 – Suez Crisis: Israel attacked Egypt to occupy the Sinai Peninsula and regain access to the Straits of Tiran, achieving a temporary reopening of the straits after international pressure forced withdrawal.
- 1967 – Six-Day War: Israel fought Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, capturing the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, and Golan Heights.
- 1967–1970 – War of Attrition: Egypt, supported by other Arab states and the PLO, sought to reclaim the Sinai from Israel, ending in a ceasefire with borders unchanged.
- 1973 – Yom Kippur War: Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel to recapture lost territories, resulting in Israeli victory with no significant territorial changes.
- 1978 – Operation Litani: Israel invaded southern Lebanon to expel PLO forces, leading to their withdrawal.
- 1982 – 1982 Lebanon War: Israel invaded Lebanon to expel the PLO in response to attacks and an assassination attempt, resulting in PLO expulsion and creation of an Israeli Security Zone.
- 1982–2000 – South Lebanon conflict: Israel and allied militias fought Hezbollah-led guerrilla forces in southern Lebanon, ending with Israeli withdrawal.
- 1987–1993 – First Intifada: Palestinian uprising against Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, suppressed leading to Oslo Accords and Palestinian Authority establishment.
- 2000–2005 – Second Intifada: Intensified Palestinian violence against Israel in the West Bank and Gaza, suppressed with Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and barrier construction.
- 2006 – Israel–Hezbollah War: Israel responded to Hezbollah’s soldier abduction with a widened confrontation, ending in a UN-brokered ceasefire stalemate.
- 2008–2009 – Gaza War or Operation Cast Lead: Israel attacked Hamas in Gaza to stop rocket fire and arms imports, achieving a ceasefire with temporary rocket reduction.
- 2012 – 2012 Gaza War or Operation Pillar of Defense: Israeli military offensive on Gaza in response to ongoing tensions, resulting in a ceasefire with claims of victory by both sides and cessation of rocket fire.
- 2014 – 2014 Gaza War or Operation Protective Edge: Israel launched an offensive on Gaza following kidnappings and rocket attacks by Hamas, ending with both sides claiming victory and no major changes.
- 2021 – 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis or Operation Guardian of the Walls: Hamas fired rockets into Israel amid riots, prompting Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in a ceasefire returning to status quo.
- 2023–present – Gaza war or Operation Iron Swords: Israel responded to Hamas’s October 7 attacks from Gaza with bombing and invasion, ongoing with a humanitarian crisis and famine in Gaza.
- 2023–2024 – Israeli–Hezbollah conflict or Operation Northern Arrows: Israel engaged Hezbollah and allies in Lebanon following attacks, ongoing with casualties on both sides.
- 2024–present – Israeli invasion of Syria or Operation Arrow of Bashan: Israel invaded Syria, ongoing with no reported casualties.
- 2025 – Twelve-Day War or Operation Rising Lion: Israel fought Iran and Houthis, resulting in a ceasefire.
To stop PLO raids, Israel launched the 1978 Operation Litani and the 1982 Lebanon War, creating a security zone that became a long guerrilla fight with Hezbollah until full withdrawal in 2000.
Palestinian frustration exploded in the 1987–1993 First Intifada and the deadlier 2000–2005 Second Intifada of suicide bombings, after which Israel disengaged from Gaza and built its security barrier.
Hezbollah’s 2006 kidnapping sparked a major Lebanon war, followed by repeated Gaza campaigns—2008–2009 Cast Lead, 2012 Pillar of Defense, 2014 Protective Edge, and 2021 Guardian of the Walls—each triggered by Hamas rockets and ending in temporary ceasefires.
The cycle escalated dramatically on 7 October 2023 with Hamas’s massacre that started the ongoing Gaza war, parallel Hezbollah fighting in 2023–2024, a 2024 Syrian buffer takeover after Assad’s collapse, and the brief 2025 Twelve-Day War against Iran and the Houthis, leaving the Middle East transformed yet still tense as of early 2026.
