On April 2, 2026, President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, a longtime loyalist and former Florida AG who had been confirmed to lead the Justice Department in early 2025. Trump announced the move via Truth Social, praising Bondi as a “great American patriot and a loyal friend” while stating she would transition to an important new job in the private sector, with Deputy AG Todd Blanche stepping in as acting attorney general. The decision followed months of reported frustration from Trump over Bondi’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files—which had become a political liability—as well as her perceived shortcomings, not aggressively prosecuting his political enemies and communicating effectively on television.
