France’s History with the Bolsheviks
France and Russia were World War I allies, but the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution (The 1917 Jewish revolution in Russia) shattered this.
The Bolsheviks (Mostly jews) – (led by Lenin) seized power in October 1917, signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany (exiting the war), and repudiated tsarist debts owed to France (a major creditor).France’s response was hostile:
- December 1917: Broke diplomatic relations with the Bolshevik regime.
- 1918–1920: France Actively intervened in the Russian Civil War on the side of the anti-Bolshevik forces. French troops landed in southern Russia (Black Sea region, including Odessa), Siberia, and elsewhere; France also provided arms, recognition to White leaders, and pushed for a “cordon sanitaire” of Eastern European states to contain Bolshevik influence. Operations largely failed due to war-weariness, mutinies, and divided objectives.
Relations thawed in the 1920s:
- 1924: France (under Prime Minister Édouard Herriot) became one of the first major Western powers to grant de jure diplomatic recognition to the USSR on October 28, 1924, driven by trade interests and balancing German power.
- The French Communist Party (PCF) was founded in 1920 after a split in the socialist party, directly inspired by the Bolshevik model and the Communist International. It grew influential in labor and politics.
Russian White émigrés (anti-Bolsheviks) fled to Paris in large numbers after 1917, creating a vibrant exile community of artists, writers, and aristocrats that shaped French culture.

Bolsheviks & Jews In France
Some Russian Jews emigrated to France before and after 1917, and a few became involved in leftist circles. However, the main link is the antisemitic myth of “Judeo-Bolshevism” (or “Jewish Bolshevism”), a conspiracy theory popular in interwar Europe, including French right-wing circles (e.g., newspapers like Je suis partout). It falsely claimed communism was a Jewish plot for world domination.
Historical facts debunk this:
- Some early Bolsheviks were of Jewish origin (e.g., Leon Trotsky), as tsarist oppression pushed a minority of Jews toward radical socialism.
- Bolsheviks officially opposed antisemitism and emancipated Russian Jews, but the regime later suppressed Jewish culture/religion like other faiths.
In short: France opposed the Bolsheviks militarily and diplomatically at first, later normalized ties, while hosting anti-Bolshevik Russian exiles. Jewish history in France is one of emancipation, integration, persecution, and resilience— and Bolshevism. There is long history with these countries.
