In a significant move for global reserve management, France has officially withdrawn its remaining 129 tons of gold reserves—representing about 5% of its total holdings—from the Federal Reserve Bank in New York. Between July 2025 and January 2026, the Banque de France sold the older, non-standard bars stored there at record-high gold prices, then purchased an equivalent amount of higher-purity (99.5%) bullion on the European market, which is now stored domestically in Paris’s secure La Souterraine vault alongside the rest of the country’s approximately 2,437-tonne reserves. The operation generated a substantial capital gain of around €13 billion (roughly $15 billion) while modernizing the holdings and eliminating any French gold presence in the U.S. without the logistical challenges of physical transport. Though some observers speculate this could signal broader preparations for shifts in the international monetary system, including potential challenges to the petrodollar, French officials describe the decision as purely operational, driven by an internal audit recommending standardized reserves rather than any political or geopolitical motive.
