A number of Iranian diplomats and officials mocked U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday after he warned that Iran would be bombed “back to the Stone Age,” while highlighting the country’s ancient and resilient civilization.

“The U.S. President’s explicit threat to “bomb Iran back to the Stone Age” reflects ignorance, not strength, and constitutes evidence of intent to commit war crimes under international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute. Iran’s civilization spans more than 7,000 years, whereas the U.S. is scarcely 250 years old. Civilizations are defined by their history, culture, resilience, and scientific contributions. The world remains indebted to the civilization and knowledge that Iranian scholars have bestowed upon humanity for millennia. Such a civilization cannot be destroyed by bombing.“
Former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif sharply criticized what he called the “arrogant, ignorant descendants” of ancient Europeans, in an apparent reference to Trump.
“Iran stood at the heart of the cradle of civilization while your ancestors in Europe (as the U.S. wasn’t even on the map) were still in the Stone Age—painting faces and swinging clubs,” Zarif posted on X. “We taught order, law and statecraft. Pity none of it reached some arrogant, ignorant descendants.”
@JZarifEarlier, the Iranian embassy in South Africa posted: “When you were still in caves searching for fire, we were inscribing human rights on the Cyrus Cylinder,” referring to the roughly 2,600-year-old artifact that records how Persian King Cyrus captured Babylon in 539 BC and is often cited as an early declaration of human rights.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations stated that Iranian civilization “spans more than 7,000 years, whereas the U.S. is scarcely 250 years old.” It added that such a civilization, defined by its history, culture, resilience, and contributions, “cannot be destroyed by bombing.
”In recent days, Trump has used increasingly harsh rhetoric to describe ongoing U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran. On Wednesday, he threatened to bomb the country “back to the Stone Age.” The following day, he warned there would be “much more to follow” if Tehran does not halt its retaliatory actions in the region.
Rights advocates and analysts have condemned the language as racist and dehumanizing. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the U.S., said in a statement: “Saying that Iranians should be bombed ‘back to the Stone Age where they belong’ is anti-Muslim, racist, and dehumanizing, and targeting civilian infrastructure is a war crime.”
